Red Hot Chili Peppers es la banda compuesta por Anthony, Flea, Chad y John, asentados en Califonia, amantes de sus playas y del surf. Su estilo empezó basándose en los principios del punk y del funk a principios de los 80. Tras más de veinte años han sobrevivido a todo tipo de desgracias, como los problemas de drogas y el fallecimiento de Hillel Slovak(guitarrista), un golpe muy duro para el grupo.Hablar de Red Hot Chili Peppers es hablar de un estilo muy peculiar, con cuerpos llenos de tatuajes y sin camiseta, saltando como locos en el escenario, siendo esta la tónica habitual de los últimos tiempos, si bien anteriormente saltaban desnudos al escenario utilizando un calcetin para cubrirse lo imprescindible. El grupo publicó su primer disco autotitulado The Red Hot Chili Peppers e inspirado en las raíces más fuertes del punk. Pero no fue hasta unos años más tarde, con la grabación de Blood Sugar Sex Magik, cuando se dieron a conocer en todo el mundo con cancines como “Under the bridge”, “Blood sugar sex magik” y “Give it away”. En esos momentos, John Frusciante (guitarrista) abandonó a los Red Hot en medio de una gira, debido a problemas con las drogas, causados por el fuerte impacto que tuvo en él el éxito, fue la época más oscura de los Peppers y en la que ante la baja de Frusciante, Dave Navarro, de Jane’s Adittion se encargó de ocupar su puesto. Fueron unos años en los que Kiedis y Frusciante se llevaban muy mal, con lo cual la relación entre los miembros del grupo no fue muy buena. Finalmente en 1998 John volvió al grupo con la ayuda de Flea, con el cual había estado siempre en contacto. La respuesta a la proposición de Flea fue concederle a John una única oportunidad para hacer una audicion con el grupo, una oportunidad que no desaprovecho. En aquella audición se comenta que todo funcionó a las mil maravillas y parecía que el tiempo no hubiese pasado, regresando así John como guitarrista a un puesto que siempre debería haber ocupado. En los Red Hot Chili Peppers el de guitarrista ha sido el puesto más sufrido desde sus comienzos, y que ha sido ocupado por seis personas aparte de Frusciante: (Hillel Slovak, Jack Sherman, Dewayne, Arik Marshal, Jesse Tobias y Dave Navarro). Durante la ausencia de Frusciante, se grabó el álbum que para los propios Red Hot se trata del que menos les gusta: One Hot Minute, aunque cierto es que incluye algunos temas bastante buenos. Pero la situación en la que se encontraban, con Kiedis y sus problemas con la heroína y con la ausencia de John, hace que por eso este álbum haya quedado en el olvido. En 1998 sale Californication, ya con Frusciante. Californication se trata de su disco más vendido hasta la fecha y que significó el renacer de un grupo que según muchos estaba acabado. En el LP se incluyen temas maestros como:”Californication” y “Otherside” (algunos de los singles de Californication), con este disco los Red Hot pretenden que se pueda apreciar la gran energía que desprende la banda por encima de cualquier esfuerzo individual y el gran momento de unión en el que se grabó el disco. En el año 2002 los Red Hot graban su último disco hasta la fecha: By the way (por cierto). En el aparecen temas marcados por la chispa más funk como “By the way” y “Can’t Stop”o los ritmos medio flamencos medio mexicanos del tema “Cabrón” y “The Zephyr Song”. Los singles de este LP han sido: “By the way”, “The Zephyr Song”, “Can’t Stop” y se prevee que el próximo será “Universally Speaking”. Se comenta que las letras de By the way son de mayor profundidad y que en el disco aparecen melodías fuertes y vibrantes aunque no tengan la chispa de épocas anteriores. En enero de 2003 comenzó en Lisboa una gira de presentación por toda Europa de la última grabación, pasando por Madrid los días 27 y 28 de enero, aunque en el 2002 ya se hizo en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid una presentación de By the way.
